Seed Balls

Seed balls are a method of propagation widely promoted by Natural Farming innovator Masanobu Fukuoka. Seed balls are simply seeds mixed with equal proportions of dried compost and clay, formed into small balls, and dried for later sowing.

To make them, simply select the seeds to be used - thick-skinned seeds will need to be scarified, and some seeds need heat or cold to bring them out of dormancy. Legumes will require inoculant if they are to fix nitrogen. Also, for species that can benefit from mycorrhizal relationships, adding the spores of mycorrhizal fungi would be beneficial, though not necessary.

Once dried, the balls are ready to be spread over land that you want to plant. When the rains come, the seeds will germinate.

The clay and humus ball prevents the seeds from the drying out in the sun, getting eaten by predators like mice and birds, or from blowing away. When sufficient rain has permeated the clay and the seeds inside sprout they are protected within the ball that contains nutrients and beneficial soil microbes. Seed balls are particularly useful in dry and arid areas where rainfall is highly unpredictable.

here is a general guide line for making seed balls:

STEP ONE: INGREDIENTS

A. Dry terracotta clay, finely ground and sifted through a strainer to remove large chunks of clay. Amount: 1 1/4 cup

B. Dry organic compost. Amount: 3/4 cup

C. 1/4 cup assorted seeds. Various wildflower & vegetable seeds can be used.

STEP TWO: Mix B & C together. (Seed mixed with dry compost.)

STEP THREE: Add A to B & C mix. Blend everything together well. Next, mist water onto the mixture while stirring. Spray just enough water to allow the mixture to stick/bind together.

STEP FOUR: Take a pinch of the finished mixture and roll (in the palm of your hand) into penny-sized round balls, 2~3 cm in diameter.

STEP FIVE: Finally, dry the balls for later use. Put seed balls in the sun to dry completely for a day or two.

STEP SIX: Broadcast seed balls onto dirt area. Water or wait for rain to allow seeds to germinate.

Makes approximately 30-40 balls

Masanobu Fukuoka Makes Seed Balls:
www.youtube.com/watch

talk bout true guerrilla gardening;

Imagine tanks used, not for warfare, but to pull land imprinters to give seed balls an advantage. Imaging cluster bombs, not killing, but being used to distribute seed balls over deserts creating green explosions. While some of these ideas may seem unrealistic, they are within the realm of possibility... if we only act.

Some suggested seeds to attract beneficial insects:
Clover, alfalfa, alyssum, nasturtium, yarrow, carrot, dill, daikon, celery, radish, fennel, caraway, chervil, gypsophila, coriander, calendula, mustard, anise hyssop, phacelia, agastache, and amaranth.

Application rate:
A minimum of ten seed balls per square meter, a higher density may be required to reclaim derelict land.

Note: Please be advised to check with your local nursery or agriculture agency to determine which beneficial, native plant species would best serve the habitat which you are trying to restore. Nonnative invader species that are proven voracious spreaders should never be used as a tool of ecological restoration.

Codex Alimentarius - Control of all Food globally by 2009

Codex Alimentarius” means “food rules” in Latin. The organization was born in 1962 when the UN established the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) as a “Trade Commission”. It was created to regulate, and thus control, every aspect of how food and nutritional supplements are produced and sold to the consumer. It is solely about trade and the profits of multi-national corporations.

The more natural health products people use, the fewer drugs they use. Millions are turning to natural health. Big Pharma fears this as it would diminish profits. Codex is designed to protect Big Pharma profits by eliminating natural health products and treatments. Health food stores and wellness companies would be hit hard.

Codex is unscientific because it classifies nutrients as toxins and uses “Risk Assessment” to set ultra low so-called “safe upper limits” for them. Risk Assessment is a branch of Toxicology, the science for assessing toxins. The proper science for assessing nutrients is Biochemistry. Codex does not use Biochemistry.

Codex is based on the Napoleonic Code, dating back to Bonaparte. Under this code, anything not explicitly permitted is automatically forbidden. Under Common Law (our system), something does not have to be explicitly permitted to be legal. The tyrannical Napoleonic Code allows the banning of natural health options by default.

Codex will go into global effect on December 31, 2009, unless we, the People, take action and avert it. Right now, we are like a frog boiled slowly, the heat raised gradually so we won’t jump out of the water. The media is used to make us believe that Codex is about “consumer protection”. Part of the media strategy is to tarnish the image of natural health options, through for-hire studies.

One-time defenders of supplements and nutritional products, such as the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) and Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), have fallen prey to new pharmaceutical members and are spreading disinformation saying that Codex is “consumer protection”. Their boards used to be run by health freedom fighters.

The U.S. has a powerful legal tool for health freedom: the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), passed in 1994 after massive grass-roots action. DSHEA scientifically classifies nutritional supplements as food and prevents dosage restrictions; Codex unscientifically classifies them as toxins and sets ultra-low doses. The VMG violates U.S. law because it violates DSHEA. We must unite to protect DSHEA, our best legal defense against Codex.

The pharmaceutical industry works through irresponsible/corrupt politicians to do their bidding. The path to institute Codex in America is to “influence” Congress to pass laws friendly to drugs and unfriendly to nutritional supplements, so that slowly everyone comes to believe that nutrients are “dangerous”, and drugs are “proper medicine”. Susan Davis (D, CA) and other politicians are helping Big Pharma by supporting bills designed to destroy DSHEA.

Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has two committees which impact nutrition.

One of them, the “Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses” (CCNFSDU), is chaired by Dr. Rolf Grossklaus, a physician who believes that nutrition has no role in health. This is the “top-guy” for Codex nutritional policy, and he has stated that “nutrition is not relevant to health”.

As unbelievable as it may sound, Dr. Grossklaus actually declared nutrients to be toxins in 1994 and instituted the use of toxicology (Risk Assessment) to prevent nutrients from having any impact on humans who take supplements! It is worth mentioning that Dr. Grossklaus happens to own the Risk Assessment company advising CCNFSDU and Codex on this issue. This company makes money when its toxicology services are used for the “assessment” of nutrients. Here in the U.S. we call that a “conflict of interest”.

Codex is made up of thousands of standards and guidelines. One of them, the Vitamin and Mineral Guideline (VMG), is designed to permit only ultra low doses of vitamins and minerals (and make clinically effective nutrients illegal). How can the VMG restrict dosages of vitamins and minerals? By using Risk Assessment (toxicology) to assess nutrients.

While Risk Assessment is a legitimate science (it is a branch of toxicology), it is the wrong science for assessing nutrients! In fact, in this context, it is actually junk science. Biochemistry, the science of life processes, is the correct science for assessing nutrients. Codex Alimentarius treats nutrients as toxins, which is literally insane.

Nutrients are not toxins - they are essential for life!!

I have a very limited amount of seed so you must be serious about growing it as not to waste the seed.

Hi
i'm new to the tribe, and this year will be my first official organic garden. i have grown stuff before but only casually. This year it's different because i live completely on raw and living foods, so this garden will replace my summer market shopping...and most likely take me to new levels of understanding nourishment.

I live in an apartment but am blessed with a large private yard and free reign over the garden beds. i am making plans with the landlord to build a raised bed for my vegetable garden (negotiating that now, as he requested that i use railroad ties....yuk!). The bed is rather long but will be shallow, so i don't have a ton of room. It's best that i start small anyway so i don't get overwhelmed.

So i am posting to find out if anyone out there would be interested in sharing seeds. I am going to order them online but won't be needing even half of what i get (no room for 10 zucchini plants...) so i got the idea to split the packages with other people. I am still figuring out what i want to order but first i wanted to feel for interest in this tribe. This could be done through the mail if you don't live local to the Seattle area, however, if you live in a very different climate from the Pacific NW, then some of my seed choices may not apply to your climate.

Nice to see this tribe exists!
oup focused on the Eco-Ark Project. Its multiple purposes include raising awareness of the Eco-ark being built in the Puna Rain Forest, encouraging others to start similar projects in their own area, sharing ideas and methodologies for accomplishing these goals, spreading ideas concerning sustainable, Eco-friendly technologies and off grid community living. Spreading knowledge of organic permaculture techniques, to encourage the building of community gardens and the growing of food in publicly accessible places (Green Ribbon Project). And helping each other to restoring this planet to its divinely intended Edenic state before it is too late.

This group will also act as a central meeting place for individuals wishing to join in the continued building of the ark on Hawaii Island next summer.

Check out http://tribes.tribe.net/ecoark? to reach Builders of the Arks! Poke around and see if it sounds like a group you would be interested in participating in. We would enjoy input from all positive, creative souls in resurrecting the balance between humanity and our planet. Aloha!

I have enough corn and California poppies to have turned into noxious invasive weeds.

Why This Conference?

For many years, plant lovers have held widely varying opinions about the appropriate roles of native and nonnative plants in our ecosystems and cultivated landscapes. Native plant enthusiasts list some nonnative plants as dangerous invaders, while Permaculturalists may advocate the cultivation and spread of those same species. Some native botanists endorse the selective application of herbicides to eradicate aggressive weedy species, while Permaculturally- inclined gardeners seem more apt to embrace “weeds” and reject chemical means of control. Meanwhile, whatever our attitudes towards natives and exotics, all of our diets and many facets of our economy depend heavily on nonnative plants. Before the arrival of Europeans, however, native plants provided sustenance to indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest for thousands of years.

This weekend gathering will bring together plant enthusiasts of all stripes to learn from one another and explore common ground. We will examine current and potential ecological and economic roles of native plants, effects of exotics on ecosystems and how best to respond to those impacts, indigenous land management techniques, and more. We will use the 87-acre living laboratory of Lost Valley Educational Center, whose Nature Center features native flora restoration projects and extensive interpretive trails through largely native habitat, and whose Permaculture gardens and projects include both native and nonnative plants. We will assess how (and whether) the different outlooks and activities represented both at this gathering and on this land can form practical syntheses which will guide us into more sustainable ways of inhabiting our region. Please join us!

New from GRAIN
February 2007
http://www.grain.org/?nfg=470

A new report from GRAIN reveals the new lobbying offensive from the
global seed industry to make it a crime for farmers to save seeds for
the next year's planting. This briefing traces the recent discussions
within the seed industry and explores what will happen if a plant
variety right becomes virtually indistinguishable from a patent.

BACKGROUND

Seed companies already have strong legal support from governments. In
many countries, seed laws require farmers to use only certified seed of
government-approved varieties. That seed is often available only from
commercial seed companies.

A rapidly increasing number of governments also grant legal monopoly
rights for commercial seed, by means of industrial patents and so-called
plant variety protection (PVP). Until recently, both seed patents and
PVP existed only in developed countries. But since the World Trade
Organisation (WTO) was created in 1994, all member governments must
provide some form of monopoly rights on seeds. There is now enormous
pressure on developing countries to adopt the developed country models.
Many have been persuaded to join the international PVP system, managed
by UPOV (International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of
Plants). In the past ten years, UPOV has more than doubled its
membership. Most new members are developing countries.

The UPOV system was originally set up in 1961, in response to many years
of lobbying by the seed industry. What the companies really wanted was
to have industrial patents on seeds. Patents give absolute rights to
control all uses of the seed, both for planting and for further
breeding. But at the time many governments felt that patents would give
industry too much power over farmers. The UPOV PVP was created as a
compromise. From the beginning, it gave seed companies a monopoly on
only the commercial multiplication and the marketing of seeds. Farmers
remained free to save seed from their own harvest to plant in the
following year, and other breeders could freely use any variety,
protected or not, to develop a new one.

During the 1980s, the development of genetic engineering attracted large
transnational companies from the pharmaceuticals and chemical sectors
into plant breeding. With their much greater lobbying power, they began
a new offensive to strengthen monopoly rights on plant breeding in
developed countries. First, they got industrial patents on plants bred
with genetic engineering (GE) and related techniques. This meant, in
practice, that they got the absolute monopoly that conventional breeders
had been refused two decades earlier.

Second, the UPOV PVP rights were radically expanded for all plant
varieties, GE or conventional. Since 1991, the PVP monopoly has applied
not only to seed multiplication but also to the harvest and sometimes
the final product as well. The previously unlimited right for farmers to
save seed for the following year's planting has been changed into an
optional exception. Only if the national government allows it can
farm-saved seed still be used, and a royalty has to be paid to the seed
company even for seeds grown on-farm.

Third, these much stronger monopoly rights are required for membership
in the WTO, as already described. This is the starting point for the new
lobby offensive now being prepared by the global seed industry. The goal
this time is to remove the few remaining differences between the PVP
system and patents, so that companies will have an absolute monopoly
over seeds all over the world, regardless of which legal system is used,
for all crops and all countries.

THE REAL TARGET - FARM-SAVED SEED

Farm-saved seed will be a primary target of this offensive. At least
two-thirds of the global crop area is currently planted with farm-saved
seed every year. In many developing countries, it represents 80--90 per
cent of all seed used, but even in developed countries it commonly
accounts for a large share (30--60 per cent). If farmers were legally
forced to plant all of this area with commercial seed, it could easily
mean a doubling of seed industry turnover, that is, an extra US$20
billion annually -- all taken out of farmers' pockets and delivered to
transnational giants such as DuPont, Bayer, Syngenta, and Monsanto.

Another key industry demand will be to restrict or eliminate the freedom
to use PVP-protected varieties for breeding -- the other major
difference between the UPOV system and patents. The purpose is simply to
block competition. If nobody else is allowed to improve on a variety
until after the term of protection -- 20 years or so -- a seed company
will be able to sell the unimproved variety for a much longer period,
and postpone the cost of new research. The net effect: increased profits
for the PVP owner, higher seed prices and fewer new varieties for
farmers.

The seed industry has every reason to fear competition from farm-saved
seed and more innovative independent breeders. Even individual farmers
can often match or beat the performance of commercial varieties by
simple on-farm selection. With constantly stronger monopoly rights and
increasing consolidation into a few giant conglomerates, seed companies
have produced fewer and fewer products of value to farmers. The big
strides in yield and resistance improvement were made early in the 20th
century, before any monopoly rights were available on seeds. And those
improvements came mainly from selecting and crossing the very best of
the thousands of farmer varieties which had been developed over
centuries, not from any industry-sponsored research.

The failure of commercial plant breeding has left global agriculture
badly prepared for the challenges of the near future, such as climate
change and the need to wean ourselves off dependence on fossil fuels. It
is now time to start rolling back the monopoly privileges of the seed
industry, not to strengthen them further.

===========================================================

My neighbor's dog (labs can be soooo destructive) tore it of the tree it was growing against and I'm only keeping one section of it to re-grow. So the other section of it needs a home. It's pretty easy to grow, put one end in dirt and give it a support to grow against, preferably something solid and wooden........... I think the hard part part is getting it to flower, I haven't seen mine flower yet, but I haven't really focused on it........... I grew it up north in a sunny room near a window (indirect brightness) and it grew just fine. Look on-line for flowering requirements I guess. Anyway, pm me an address and it's yours.........

The final design for a "doomsday" vault that will house seeds from all known varieties of food crops has been unveiled by the Norwegian government.

The Svalbard International Seed Vault will be built into a mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole.

The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change.

Construction begins in March, and the seed bank is scheduled to open in 2008.

The Norwegian government is paying the $5m (£2.5m) construction costs of the vault, which will have enough space to house three million seed samples.

See inside the Svalbard International Seed Vault

The collection and maintenance of the collection is being organised by the Global Crop Diversity Trust, which has responsibility of ensuring the "conservation of crop diversity in perpetuity".

"We want a safety net because we do not want to take too many chances with crop biodiversity," said Cary Fowler, the Trust's executive director.

"Can you imagine an effective, efficient, sustainable response to climate change, water shortages, food security issues without what is going to go in the vault - it is the raw material of agriculture."

Future proof

The seed vault will be built 120m (364ft) inside a mountain on Spitsbergen, one of four islands that make up Svalbard.

Map showing location of Svalbard (Image: BBC)

Dr Fowler said Svalbard, 1,000km (621 miles) north of mainland Norway, was chosen as the location for the vault because it was very remote and it also offered the level of stability required for the long-term project.

"We looked very far into the future. We looked at radiation levels inside the mountain, and we looked at the area's geological structure," he told BBC News.

"We also modelled climate change in a drastic form 200 years into future, which included the melting of ice sheets at the North and South Poles, and Greenland, to make sure that this site was above the resulting water level."

By building the vault deep inside the mountain, the surrounding permafrost would continue to provide natural refrigeration if the mechanical system failed, explained Dr Fowler.

'Living Fort Knox'

The Arctic vault will act as a back-up store for a global network of seed banks financially supported by the trust.

Dr Fowler said that a proportion of the seeds housed at these banks would be deposited at Svalbard, which will act as a "living Fort Knox".

Although the vault was designed to protect the specimens from catastrophic events, he added that it could also be used to replenish national seed banks.

"One example happened in September when a typhoon ripped through the Philippines and destroyed its seed bank," Dr Fowler recalled.

"The storm brought two feet of water and mud into the bank, and that is the last thing you want in a seed bank."

Low maintenance

Once inside the vault, the samples will be stored at -18C (0F). The length of time that seeds kept in a frozen state maintain their ability to germinate depends on the species.

Freshwater ice (Image: P.Vermeij/Crop Diversity Trust)
The Arctic conditions will help keep the seeds in a frozen state
Some crops, such as peas, may only survive for 20-30 years. Others, such as sunflowers and grain crops, are understood to last for many decades or even hundreds of years.

Once the collection has been established at Svalbard, Dr Fowler said the facility would operate with very little human intervention.

"Somebody will go up there once every year to physically check inside to see that everything is OK, but there will be no full-time staff," he explained.

"If you design a facility to be used in worst-case scenarios, then you cannot actually have too much dependency on human beings."

Does anyone know of a source in the U.S. to get tropical seeds, especially medicinals from Brazil or Peru (or perhaps Costa Rica?) I lived in Brazil and worked with the medicines there but now that I am back in California, I wish I could grow some here to add to my herbal apothecary. Hmmm. I have several in mind but the ones I can think of right now are Unha de Gato (cat's claw), Capeba, Carqueja, Amor do Campo, Espinheira Santa, Sete Sangrias, Pata de Vaca, Quebra Pedra, Tiririca...if you know of a quality source and are unfamiliar with these folk names, I can provide scientific names for them as well. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Blessings to you...

I’ve recently discovered a new and wonderful way of collecting seeds from a variety of plants.

My job requires that I spend the entire day outside knocking door to door. Most of the areas neighbourhoods I work in have gardens in their front yards. When out knocking yesterday I walked past an interesting tree that had seeds just waiting to be carried away by the wind . . . so I grabbed a couple. Nothing that would damage the tree, or would make the home owner mad, just a few of the hundreds of otherwise unwanted seeds. I continued this process of selection and collection as I continued my walk through the neighbourhood until I had amassed about 17 seeds for about 6 different species of plant.

I would never take a seed if I thought it would hurt the plant, or if I didn’t think the seed was fully matured. Likewise if I think it would piss off the homeowner if I took a seed, I don’t touch it. I was just wondering if anyone had heard of something / done something like this? I thought it would make a fun thread.

What is the best method to do this? I know many seeds/nuts need some time in the cold to germinate so should I just try to replicate nature, or just plant them in pots outside for the winter (I’m growing them mostly to give to friends).
