South African plants

Would anyone be interested in seeds from South African plants (would love to trade... need any organic seeds - herbs / veg / fruit / etc)?

If you are at a bit of a loss as what grows here.... check out this site: www.plantzafrica.com/

One of my favourite species is the pelargonium (related to geranium) - some produce aromatic oils and some have amazing medicinal properties.

Strelitzia (Common Names: Crane flower, Bird of Paradise Flower) is also another beauty to check out.

Love and light,

I would love to get some seed of Hoodia gordonii and would offer a number of possible plants from Costa Rica. Of course we have a wet climate compared to most of South Africa, but many of what we grow would serve there.

To bring in seed here it is best to enclose seed in an envelop with a letter, in other words hide them because if one tries to send seed fulfilling all the legal requirements, the cost in time and money is very high.

    If interested, let me know.

Would love to help but this is a protected plant and trade is restricted.

I doubt it would grow in your country due to your wet climate - hoodia only grows naturally in Kalahari and Namibia (both are semi-desert).

First, I'm thinking of growing a few under a greenhouse roof. Second, I grow lots of desert cacti outside here by grafting them on a local pitaya cactus that just loves lots of rain. I know that Hoodia is not a cactus and grafting is made very difficult by its milky latex but things can be tried. We have fleshy Euphorbs here that grow well under wet conditions.

Thirdly, you say it is protected because of trade restrictions. I was only speaking of slipping a dozen seeds into an envelope on the sly. Costa Rica is certainly not the place to try a couple of hectares of this! Or are these restrictions another attempt to keep down foreign commercial competition by preventing propagation material from escaping the country? That's been tried over and over again in other parts of the world and does not really work.

Does your area grow any pitaya? That's the cactus vine species with large, sweet fruit that are commercialized in many parts of the world.

I would love some bird of paradise seeds! Will you send them to the States? I have some organic flowers (echinacea, poppies, and others) and some gourd and cantaloupe seeds that kept from my own garden, which I grow naturally, with no chemicals or pesticides. I'm not certified organic because its just my own private garden, but if that's good enough for you, I'd be happy to send you some! I love growing things that are different and unusual. I have a ton of houseplants, because it gets so cold here in the winter. I have a couple small greenhouse enclosures in my basement too. I can grow any type of plant since I can modify the environment to fit the plants needs. I have tropicals and cacti in my house and they both do just fine.
        Let me know.

Sure! I would be happy to send you some BOP seeds. Will try to think of a few other unusual ones to go with them ; )

I can see they will be loved in your home! Anything organic that is medicinal (echinacea is great) or functional (food) would be great. Starting a farm one of these days so I will need all the help I can get. It's really hard to get organic seeds in this country. Send me your details off-line and we can take it from there.
          Love and light,

Do you have any native salvias? My wife has a number of vegetables and herbs to trade, along with many other plants, and likes to collect salvias. If you are interested she can provide a list of what she has.
