Hey, I wanted to see if anyone has any seeds or experience with these crops in the region of southern oregon or northern california.
oca (oxalis tuberosa) and ulluco (ullucus tuberosum) are both potato like tubers from south america. Also Achocha is a cucurbit from peru and bolivia with several varieties (Cyclanthera pedata) hopefully i will find seeds for this somewhere it looks like the internet is hopefull.
melothrie i dont know much about, a cucumber like vine with small fruits -Apodanthera pringlei or Melothria scabra
if yall know anything i want to learn, if you want fig trees let me know
cheers!

Re: Does anyone have achocha seeds in southern oregon also, Oca and Ulluco - melothrie
Sun, December 23, 2007 - 2:54 PMI think Achocha and melothrie are longer season annuals, from peru they would probably enjoy temperate long season climates like the SF bay. You should be able to pull them off with an average length season with proper care. i think they can go perennial in frost free situations.
these plants can be awsome and very productive. Also the african horned jelly melon(cucumis metuliferus) is a good one, this tropical perennial cucumber is resistant to fruit flys and can be grown in hawaii or any temperate climate as an annual.
oca & ulluco i know very little about
chiapas corn for trade! -

Sun, December 23, 2007 - 3:16 PMi know a few folks that have made heated beds for the long season tubers.
you may want to contact ricco at horizonherbs.com. if he is in town and can take your call, he would be able to help you with seed probably, if it is not listed in their catalog. let me know how it works, the tubers are intresting to me too. -

Mon, December 24, 2007 - 5:42 PMHere is a great article about oca and also a link to Nichols who are in Albany Oregon who carry them.
If you are prone to kidney stones be careful about your intake of oca as it has a large amount to oxalic acid which can exacerbate your stones!
