Re: Saint John's Wort, Official (Hypericum perforatum)
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 10:23 AMHave any of you heard about this thing of Ginko trees coming in male and female? If I recall correctly it seems that people tend to strongly favor one over the other because one of them has an intense and horrible aroma. Will seeds from the one in the park produce the exact replica of the one growing there, or would seeds from it grow up into both males and females? -

Re: Saint John's Wort, Official (Hypericum perforatum)
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 10:38 AMYes Ginkgo has separate male and female trees...(Dioecious)..A tree will produce both male and female seeds (just like humans)...and I am pretty sure it is the female that has the stink...(check on that)
Growing Ginkgo from seed is a patient process...try soaking the seeds in a solution of Kelp extract for about 48 hours...you can also drill a small hole in the seed (be sure not to drill into the radical...it's where the root will start coming out) before soaking to allow water to penetrate....then plant the seed in soil about 1" deep and keep moist for a month or two until it sprouts (like really... up to two months on seed germination) ....Ginkgo is the oldest living species of tree living in the world...and it requires much patience....
Happy sprouting,

Re: Saint John's Wort, Official (Hypericum perforatum)
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 11:03 AM{yes it is the female ginkgo that stinks - the fruit around the seed to be exact. and fyi, the process of nicking the seed coat to assist germination is called scarification.}
I have an interesting Hypericum x moserianum tricolor with beautiful red and gold and green foliage and smaller yellow flowers than the medicinal variety. very pretty and easy to grow! no seeds though, as it is a selected hybrid.
